Family therapy, parenting advice and counselling
When family relationships are under strain, it can be very helpful to seek the advice of professionals who are trained to assist families sort out their emotional difficulties.
There are a baffling number of different kinds of help and different names for professionals. Your GP or health visitor are good starting points for finding out about this sort of help.

- The 'Family matters - A Government website that provides a wide range of information on subjects including adoption and fostering, having a baby, childcare, early years developmentĀ and relationships, children and the law and parents' common concerns.
- Relate - offers advice and counselling to people who want help to understand their relationships and try to change things for the better. Helpline: 0845 130 4010
- Parentlineplus - provides advice on parenting generally via their website, email or telephone. They can signpost more specialist help and also run parenting groups in some parts of the country. Helpline: 0800 808 2222 available 24 hours
- Institute of Family Therapy - Their website describes family therapy, what it can do, how much it may cost and where you can get it.
- Counselling - Your GP may be able to refer you to a counselling or psychotherapy service but you can also find a service for yourself. The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you find counselling or psychotherapy.
