Family Justice Council Guidelines on Judges meeting Children

These guidelines have been developed by the Voice of the Child sub-committee of the Family Justice Council.

They were approved by Sir Mark Potter before he retired and I am grateful for the work of the sub-committee in formulating them and I endorse and commend them to you.

The Guidelines are just that; guidelines for judges to take into account in the context of the current Practice Directions governing procedures for Public law and Private law Children Act 1989 cases. Accordingly, while the Judicial Studies Board will, I am sure, bring the Guidelines to judges' attention within their programmes, I have not at this stage suggested they should design a training module specifically to address them.

Sir Nicholas Wall

President of the Family Division

May 2010.
