Home Office initiative to help stop violence against women and girls

On 9 March the Home Secretary launched a consultation to raise awareness to encourage discussion and debate on how together we can end violence against women and girls to overcome its debilitating effects.

This inform a cross-Government strategy about tackling violence against women and girls.

It is the Government's priority to build on the achievements of the Violent Crime Unit in this area, and search for solutions that can create a society in which women and girls feel safe and confident in their homes and in our communities, to live freely, contribute to society, and prosper in their daily lives.

The Violent Crime Unit want as many people as possible to be involved to challenge the attitudes that make violence against women and girls acceptable to some. They are keen that this consultation engages with all sectors of society: men and women, girls and boys. We should strive for a society in which women and girls feel safe and confident in their homes and in our communities so that they can live freely, contribute to society and prosper in their daily lives. They very much look forward to working with you in achieving this.

As part of the consultation the Violent Crime Unit are looking to speak with stakeholders from the local area to engage in-depth with the consultation process probe specific policy questions. This is an opportunity for people who work within local authorities / local delivery bodies / education / health / safety / transport etc., to have their views heard on this important issue. We urge you to come along to an event being held near you. Please log onto: http://www.endviolenceagainstwomenconsultation.co.uk/ to register.

The consultation events will be supported by a roadshow bus which will visit local shopping centres, universities, sports grounds, train stations etc intended to enable a public debate on this topic. The bus will be a powerful tool with local media and it will open the debate up to a wide cross-section of the general public who would not normally engage with government consultations. Further information and the consultation document are available at www.homeoffice.gov.uk/keepwomensafe
